Mortal Kombat 2 Director Teases Return of Dead Characters – Here's How

Mortal Kombat 2 is shaping up to be a thrilling sequel, with director Simon McQuoid teasing that characters killed in the 2021 movie may not be gone for good. As the first look at Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage makes waves, McQuoid confirmed that Josh Lawson’s Kano and Max Huang’s Kung Lao are making a return—despite their apparent deaths in the first film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon hinted at how these resurrections could work. “We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm... There are ways to bring dead characters back," Boon explained. He also made it clear that Lawson is not playing Kano’s twin, shutting down any speculation of a lookalike storyline.

Alongside the returning characters, the sequel introduces new faces, including Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. McQuoid promises an even grander spectacle this time, with more intense action, larger-scale fights, and exploration of multiple realms.

"What I realized was: go bigger, go bolder, don't hold back," McQuoid said, emphasizing that Mortal Kombat 2 will fully embrace the franchise’s deep lore and brutal combat.

Set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, the highly anticipated sequel is expected to deliver the ultimate cinematic Mortal Kombat experience.
