A magnitude 3.9 earthquake rattled the Bay Area on Monday evening, with its epicenter located 3 miles west of Dublin, California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, initially recorded as a 4.2 magnitude before being downgraded, struck at 7:46 p.m. at a depth of approximately 7.27 miles.
The tremor was widely felt across the region, with more than 11,000 reports submitted to the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” feature. While most reports indicated weak to light shaking, residents as far as San Francisco, Napa, and Santa Cruz also experienced movement.
Although no injuries or major damage were reported, several Bay Area residents described their experiences. Some reported shaking furniture and items falling off shelves, while others initially mistook the movement for strong wind.
Safety Reminders
The USGS advises residents to follow earthquake safety measures:
✅ Drop, cover, and hold on during an earthquake.
✅ If indoors, stay inside and protect yourself from falling objects.
✅ Be prepared for aftershocks, which can follow the main quake.
While this earthquake caused only minor disturbances, it serves as a reminder for Bay Area residents to stay prepared for seismic activity.
