Adjoa Andoh Criticizes TV Bosses for Poor Lighting of Black Actors

Adjoa Andoh from Bridgerton discusses lighting issues for Black actors on Stirring It Up podcast

Hey Bridgerton fans! Have you heard the latest from Lady Danbury herself, Adjoa Andoh? 🎭👑 The talented actress, who brings the fierce and fabulous Lady Danbury to life in Netflix's "Bridgerton," recently opened up about a frustrating issue in the entertainment industry: the failure to properly light Black actors.

Adjoa's Powerful Message

On the Stirring It Up podcast, Adjoa Andoh shared her experiences with hosts Miquita Oliver and her mother Andi. Despite the show’s acclaim for its diverse cast, Andoh revealed that the struggle to get proper lighting for Black actors is still very real. “It’s very tiring and very distracting,” she said. “It’s not my s**t, and I don’t want to think about it.”

Standing Up for Change

When asked if she feels powerful in her career, Andoh was honest: "No. The continuing conversation about lighting black skin on every show. Nothing's changed. They're getting better, so I suppose I feel powerful in that I will now go, 'Am I blonde?'" She emphasized her reluctance to constantly bring up the issue, wanting to focus on her craft instead. "I want to be Lady Danbury and be totally engaged in that," she added.

More Than Just a Role

Adjoa Andoh’s impact on "Bridgerton" goes beyond her acting. She worked closely with creator Shonda Rhimes to develop Lady Danbury's backstory, incorporating her own West African heritage. She also teamed up with the costume designer to create stunning jewelry for the third season, featuring West African symbols.

Why This Matters

Adjoa’s candid remarks shed light on an important issue in the industry. It’s not just about representation but ensuring that all actors are given the tools they need to shine—literally and figuratively. As Adjoa said, "I'm not asking for a special revelation, I just want to live in my gift."
