Hardcore Band Gel Breaks Up After Shocking Allegations Against Guitarist
New Jersey hardcore band Gel was on the verge of a career-defining year. With their latest EP Persona gaining momentum, a spot on Coachella 2025, and tours lined up with Spiritbox and Volbeat, the band was set for mainstream recognition.
But in an unexpected and heartbreaking turn of events, Gel has officially broken up—and the reasons behind their sudden split are as disturbing as they are shocking.
Why Did Gel Break Up?
On March 19, 2025, Gel released a statement on social media announcing their immediate disbandment, citing the actions of former guitarist Anthony Webster. The band accused Webster of:
- Financial theft, including stealing tens of thousands of dollars.
- Using band funds to pay for OnlyFans subscriptions.
- Reckless and dangerous behavior, including erratic driving and provoking online threats against the band.
- Leaking nude images of band members on Reddit, violating their privacy in an extreme way.
“Gel is no longer a band,” the statement read. “Anthony Webster has committed such heinous acts in trying to forward himself in his musical career that he’s done irreparable damage to the band in the process, and it’s affected us as human beings more than we can even attempt to explain.”
Serious Allegations Against Anthony Webster
According to the band, Webster had full control over Gel’s finances, cutting off the rest of the members from access while spending money on OnlyFans and other personal expenses.
Perhaps the most disturbing revelation is the allegation that Webster leaked nude images of his own bandmates on Reddit. “Let that one really sink in,” the band wrote. “He did that all while still in a band with us.”
Beyond financial and personal violations, the band detailed a pattern of manipulative and physically dangerous behavior, including:
- Smashing their van window after provoking online fights.
- Erratic, reckless driving that put the band’s lives at risk.
- Physical aggression towards his own bandmates.
Gel compared their experience to being in an abusive relationship, saying they didn’t leave sooner because they loved what they built together.
“This is our life’s work, our passion. It’s not so easy to just give something up,” they explained. “We saw it through to the very end, until it simply couldn’t go on anymore.”
Fans React to Gel’s Breakup
The hardcore music scene was stunned by the announcement, with fans expressing both heartbreak and outrage over Webster’s actions. Many called for legal consequences, while others hoped the remaining members could reform the band without Webster.
The band also issued an apology to fans and fellow musicians like Spiritbox and Volbeat, who they were set to tour with.
“We are so sorry that we have to end it this way,” they wrote. “Take care of each other, and love your friends.”
What’s Next for Gel’s Former Members?
While there’s no official word on whether the band will continue without Webster, the damage seems too severe for an immediate revival.
For now, it appears that Gel’s legacy will live on through their music, but their time as an active band has come to an unfortunate and heartbreaking end.
