Gwyneth Paltrow Told Intimacy Coordinator to ‘Step Back’ During Sex Scenes with Timothée Chalamet
Gwyneth Paltrow is making her big-screen return in Marty Supreme, and she’s not holding back when it comes to discussing the film’s intimate moments. Starring alongside Timothée Chalamet, Paltrow revealed that the two share a passionate, transactional relationship in the upcoming A24 drama, directed by Josh Safdie.
In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar-winning actress addressed the experience of filming sex scenes with Chalamet and how industry norms—such as the presence of intimacy coordinators—have changed since her early days in Hollywood.
A Complex On-Screen Romance
Paltrow, 52, and Chalamet, 29, play entangled lovers in Marty Supreme, a film loosely inspired by the life of table tennis champion Martin "Marty" Reisman. Paltrow’s character is married to a man involved in the underground world of Ping-Pong, but finds herself drawn into an intense relationship with Marty (Chalamet).
“They meet, and she’s had a pretty tough life. I think he breathes life back into her,” Paltrow explained. “But it’s kind of transactional for them both.”
This “transactional” relationship involves numerous intimate scenes—something Paltrow made clear in her interview:
“There’s a lot—a lot of sex in this movie.”
Paltrow on Intimacy Coordinators: ‘Step a Little Bit Back’
One of the biggest shifts in Hollywood since Paltrow’s early career is the use of intimacy coordinators, professionals who help ensure actors feel safe and comfortable during sex scenes. However, the actress admitted that the concept was unfamiliar to her:
“There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed.”
She recounted a moment on set when the coordinator asked for her approval on a scene:
“I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’”
Ultimately, she and Chalamet decided they were comfortable without much intervention:
“We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’”
While she acknowledged that intimacy coordinators might be helpful for younger actors, Paltrow shared that she prefers a more organic approach to acting in intimate scenes.
Timothée Chalamet: ‘A Thinking Man’s Sex Symbol’
Paltrow had nothing but praise for her co-star, calling him a “thinking man’s sex symbol” and commending his dedication to the craft:
“He’s just a very polite, properly raised—I was going to say ‘kid.’ He’s a man who takes his work really seriously and is a fun partner.”
Chalamet now joins an impressive list of leading men who have starred opposite Paltrow, including Brad Pitt, Jude Law, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr.
Paltrow’s Return to Acting
Although Paltrow has made occasional appearances in Marvel films and the Netflix series The Politician, Marty Supreme marks her first serious film role since 2010’s Country Strong. Over the past decade, she has been focused on parenting and growing her wellness brand, Goop.
With a cast that also includes Tyler, the Creator, Fran Drescher, and Sandra Bernhard, Marty Supreme is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the year.
When Does Marty Supreme Release?
The A24 film hits theaters on Christmas Day 2025, promising a bold, unconventional love story that blends high-stakes drama with Safdie’s signature gritty realism.
