‘Sinners’ Features Costumes From MCU’s Scrapped ‘Blade’ Reboot – A Hidden Marvel Surprise
Marvel’s long-anticipated Blade reboot may still be stuck in development limbo, but fans just got an unexpected glimpse into what could have been—thanks to a clever crossover with the new horror hit Sinners.
In a surprising reveal on the ScreenCrush podcast, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian shared that Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter had originally created a warehouse full of period costumes for the now-delayed Blade project starring Mahershala Ali. When Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, needed quick access to era-specific wardrobe, Marvel stepped in to help.
“Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting,” Ohanian explained. “At one point, that movie was going to deal with the past, around the same era as Sinners. She had a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and Marvel kindly let us purchase them.”
While the main cast of Sinners had custom-designed costumes, many of the background actors were styled in authentic, unused outfits originally made for Blade. This fun Marvel Easter egg adds an extra layer of intrigue for fans of both horror and superheroes.
Marvel Studios first announced the Blade reboot in 2019 with Mahershala Ali in the lead role. However, multiple setbacks—including director changes and the 2023 writers’ strike—have paused production. The film was even removed from Marvel’s 2025 schedule.
Still, Marvel President Kevin Feige insists the project is alive: “We love the character, and Mahershala’s version of him. He will be coming to the MCU.”
Until then, Sinners offers a stylish sneak peek into a Blade world we never got to see—at least not yet.
