Rev. Jimmy Swaggart Passes Away at 90: Honoring a Televangelism Pioneer's Legacy
In a profound loss to the Christian world, Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, one of America’s most influential televangelists, has passed away at the age of 90. The Louisiana-born pastor, musician, and founder of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries died peacefully on July 1, surrounded by his loved ones. According to his family, he has now "finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ."
A public viewing and wake will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Worship Center Church in Baton Rouge. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Sunday, July 13, at 6 p.m., also at the church where he served as senior pastor for decades.
Swaggart’s life was a tapestry of triumphs and controversies. Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, he began his ministry in 1958, and by 1975, he launched his now-global television ministry. At its peak in the 1980s, his broadcasts reached millions of households, cementing his legacy as a pioneer in Christian broadcasting. Despite facing a major scandal in 1988 that led to his defrocking, Swaggart remained a central figure in the Pentecostal movement.
Swaggart was not just a preacher but also a Grammy-nominated gospel musician, having sold over 15 million records worldwide. He penned nearly 50 Christian books and was instrumental in launching SonLife Radio and Broadcasting Networks, which continue to inspire believers around the world.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Frances Swaggart, and their son, Donnie Swaggart, who now carries on the family’s evangelical mission.
Swaggart’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy in evangelism, gospel music, and Christian education lives on. As tributes pour in across social media, one thing is clear — Rev. Jimmy Swaggart’s impact on modern Christianity is unforgettable.
