Josh Hutcherson Teases Terrifying Animatronics and Bigger Scares in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 at Comic-Con 2025
San Diego, CA – July 24, 2025 — Horror fans at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 were treated to thrilling new details about the much-anticipated sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 during a packed Hall H panel. Returning star Josh Hutcherson, joined by castmates and the creative team behind the Blumhouse horror franchise, revealed a sneak peek of what’s to come when the film hits theaters on December 5.
And from the sounds of it, this sequel is going to be scarier, bigger, and packed with a lot more animatronics.
Hutcherson Returns as Mike Schmidt—And He's Still Not Catching a Break
Josh Hutcherson, 32, who reprises his role as tormented security guard Mike Schmidt, spoke to fans about his character’s emotional journey and deepening bond with his younger sister Abby, played again by Piper Rubio.
“Mike and Abby went through a lot in the first movie,” Hutcherson told the audience. “Mike is just trying to find a stable life... and that just can’t happen. Poor Mike. He’s going through it.”
Hutcherson added that the bond between the siblings will become “even stronger” in this sequel, despite the increasingly intense supernatural chaos around them.
More Animatronics. Bigger Set Pieces. Maximum Terror.
Director Emma Tammi, who helmed the original 2023 hit, confirmed what fans were hoping for: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will raise the stakes in every possible way.
“There’s so much more action in this one... with the animatronics,” Tammi said. “That was incredibly exciting.”
According to Hutcherson, audiences can expect “a lot more animatronics” and “bigger set pieces”—elements that will take the tension, jump scares, and immersive horror to an entirely new level.
And yes, the terrifying team at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is back to create the nightmarish animatronic characters. The legacy studio was also behind the spine-chilling visuals in the first film.
New Faces Join the Freddy’s Universe
The sequel boasts several new cast members, including:
-
Skeet Ulrich
-
Teo Briones
-
Wayne Knight
-
Mckenna Grace
They join returning stars Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, and Piper Rubio, expanding the world of Freddy Fazbear’s haunted pizzeria.
Ulrich gave fans a small tease of his mysterious character:
“I play somebody with a particular past and a deep emotional tie to what’s going on.”
He also took a moment to praise his longtime friend and Scream co-star Matthew Lillard, who appeared via video message and jokingly called for a third film so his character could finally "kill off Mike."
Josh Hutcherson’s Cupcake Confession
When asked which animatronic he would cosplay as at Comic-Con, Hutcherson gave a playful and unexpected answer:
“I’m gonna go with Cupcake, because then I get carried around… it just sounds nice. There’s a lot of walking here.”
The moment drew laughter from the crowd, reminding fans that despite the darkness of the Freddy’s world, there’s still plenty of fun behind the scenes.
A Loyal Fandom and a Bright Future for the Franchise
Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum and director Emma Tammi both expressed deep gratitude to the fans for turning Five Nights at Freddy’s into a full-blown franchise. The original film was a box office smash in 2023, and based on the crowd reaction in Hall H, the sequel is poised to be even bigger.
“I’ve become so invested in these characters,” Tammi said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to continue telling their stories and expanding this universe.”
Blum also confirmed earlier this year that more films are being considered, depending on the success of the sequel. And judging by the energy at Comic-Con, Freddy’s fans are hungry for more.
