Colin Farrell Opens Up About Placing Son with Angelman Syndrome in Long-Term Care Facility

Hollywood star Colin Farrell is known for his award-winning performances, but off-screen, his most personal and powerful role is that of a father. In a candid new interview, the 48-year-old actor opened up about the emotional and “tricky” decision to place his son James, 21, who has Angelman syndrome, into a long-term care facility.

🧬 Understanding James’ Diagnosis

James was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at just 2½ years old—a rare neurogenetic disorder that causes developmental delays, balance issues, and speech impairments. Colin and his ex, model Kim Bordenave, have been hands-on caregivers for over two decades.

💭 Why Farrell Made the Heart-Wrenching Decision

In his interview with Candis magazine, Farrell shared that while many parents choose to be full-time caregivers, he worried about what would happen if something happened to him or James' mother.

“What if I have a heart attack tomorrow? What if Kim has a car crash and she’s taken too?” Farrell said. “Then James is on his own… a ward of the state.”

Rather than risk that uncertainty, the couple decided to find a care facility now—while they’re still healthy and present in James' life—to ensure his long-term safety, happiness, and connection to the world.

🌈 A Life of Joy, Not Isolation

Farrell stressed that their goal is to provide James with a full, connected life, including daily outings, shopping trips, beach days, and visits to museums and movies. “We want him to feel part of life, not tucked away,” he said.

👨‍👦 A Father’s Advocacy and Legacy

In 2021, Farrell and Bordenave filed for conservatorship ahead of James’ 18th birthday to legally support his adult needs. Then in 2024, Farrell launched the Colin Farrell Foundation, which helps young adults with intellectual disabilities navigate life after they age out of special education systems.

“Once your child turns 21, all the support systems vanish,” he told People. “They’re left behind. That has to change.”

💬 Farrell’s Reaction to the Diagnosis

Looking back, Farrell recalls the moment he first learned of James’ diagnosis. His questions were instinctive and raw:

“I asked, ‘What’s the life expectancy and how much pain is involved?’”
The doctor replied, “‘Life expectancy is the same as you and me. Pain? No.’”

👨‍👦‍👦 Farrell’s Family Life

In addition to James, Colin is also father to 14-year-old Henry, whom he shares with actress Alicja Bachleda-Curuś. Despite his demanding film career, Farrell remains deeply committed to fatherhood and advocating for special needs awareness.

💬 A Message of Love and Responsibility

Colin Farrell’s honesty shines a spotlight on the emotional complexities faced by parents of children with disabilities. His decision isn’t about stepping away—it’s about stepping forward with love, foresight, and deep responsibility.
