Ceremonia Festival in Mexico City Suspended After Death of Two Photographers
The 2025 edition of the Ceremonia Festival in Mexico City ended in tragedy. The second day of the event was suspended by authorities following the death of two photographers, Berenice Giles and Miguel Hernández, after a decorative metal structure collapsed during a wind gust at Parque Bicentenario.
A Fatal Accident
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when a metal structure fell on the photographers, who were working for the music media outlet mr indie.
Both suffered traumatic brain injuries and multiple fractures. They were transported to Hospital General Doctor Rubén Leñero, but unfortunately arrived without vital signs.
What Went Wrong?
According to officials from the Miguel Hidalgo borough, the organizers failed to notify authorities about the installation of cranes, including the one that held the collapsed structure, and therefore, these were not inspected beforehand.
“It was a last-minute decision by the private organizers to install them today during the concert,” they stated in an official release.
On the other hand, the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection blamed the borough for neglect and lack of proper supervision.
Reactions and Consequences
The capital’s Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine who is responsible. Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, expressed her condolences and confirmed that authorities would closely monitor the case.
The festival continued its program until the deaths were confirmed. It was officially suspended after midnight.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” the Ceremonia Festival wrote on Instagram. “The safety of our community has always been our top priority.”
The Legacy of Berenice and Miguel
mr indie, the media outlet they worked for, posted a heartfelt tribute:
“Both were an essential part of mr indie… Berenice and Miguel will be remembered for all they contributed during their lives. Their vision behind the lens, their sensitivity, and their energy remain with us.”
A Festival Marked by the Wind?
This is not the first time Festival Ceremonia has faced issues due to weather. In 2017, a day of performances was canceled in Toluca after strong wind gusts caused part of a stage to collapse, although no one was injured then.
The accident has sparked a wider discussion about event organizer responsibility, government oversight, and safety at large-scale events.
✍️ We will continue reporting as the investigation progresses.
🕊️ Rest in peace, Berenice Giles and Miguel Hernández.
