Nicole Kidman’s Holland Pays Homage to “Ugly Design” in New Thriller
Nicole Kidman is stepping into a twisted mystery with a nostalgic aesthetic in her latest thriller, Holland. Set in the tulip-filled town of Holland, Michigan, the film follows Kidman as Nancy Vandergroot, a seemingly perfect housewife whose world unravels when she uncovers her husband’s dark secrets.
Filming Locations & Nostalgic Set Design
🎬 While the real Holland, Michigan, was a backdrop, much of the film was shot in Nashville, where a 1935 Tudor-style home was transformed into the Vandergroot residence.
🛋️ Production designer JC Molina crafted interiors inspired by real-life ‘80s and ‘90s Midwestern homes, featuring:
✔ Bold wallpapers & mismatched textures
✔ Cluttered yet curated décor
✔ Niched computer rooms & slanted ceilings
💬 “The ‘80s and ‘90s were an era of ugly design, and we leaned into it," Molina shared. “Nancy is someone who tried too hard to be perfect, leading to a clashing mix of styles.”
A Psychological Thriller with a Unique Look
Beyond its gripping mystery, Holland delivers a visual time capsule, proving that even “ugly” design can be cinematically stunning.
💬 What do you think of the movie’s bold design choices? Would you bring back these '90s trends? 🏡✨
