Hollywood actress and filmmaker Justine Bateman is encouraging young voters to break free from political influence and make their own decisions, rather than blindly following party loyalty or media narratives. In a thought-provoking post on X (formerly Twitter), the Family Ties star voiced her concerns about how those under 30 have been pressured into taking sides rather than evaluating policies critically.
"You've Been Cheated," Says Bateman
Bateman believes that young voters have been misled into thinking they must "resist the other side" instead of objectively analyzing political candidates. She argues that politicians should have to “audition” for votes and that individuals should make choices based on what benefits the country as a whole, rather than pledging allegiance to a party.
“This is not about parties or pledging fealty to a ‘political team.’ This is about your right as an American adult to not be told by the media or the oldest people in either party how you should be interpreting policies and actions," Bateman wrote.
She also criticized the media for promoting fear and division, calling it a "ridiculous insistence that you give yourself a heart attack over nothing." Instead, she urges young voters to step away from the panic and focus on forming their own opinions.
A Call for Independent Thinking
Bateman’s comments quickly gained traction, with many social media users agreeing that political pressure and media bias have created a divisive environment. She warned that this culture of extreme partisanship and forced loyalty is harmful, adding that young voters should trust their intelligence and intuition.
“They disrespect your intelligence and innate wisdom,” she wrote, emphasizing that the constant state of panic many feel is not normal but rather a product of the media’s influence since 2016.
Free Speech and the Political Divide
This isn’t the first time Bateman has spoken out on political issues. She previously described the last four years as a time of “walking on eggshells,” where expressing certain opinions was met with scrutiny. She also reflected on former President Donald Trump’s election, stating that while she doesn't align with extremes, his victory broke a “kind of suffocating cloud” that had suppressed free speech.
“Regular people who had questions about decisions that were being made were threatened subtly or obviously into silence. And I feel like that’s been broken,” she told Fox News Digital.
What’s Next for Young Voters?
Bateman’s message is clear: young people should not be swayed by media-fueled fear or political loyalty. Instead, they should demand more from candidates, think independently, and not let politics consume their lives.
Her bold stance raises an important question—should young voters reject the influence of media narratives and political pressure? Or is party loyalty essential in today’s polarized climate?
