Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Sandman’ is coming to an end with its upcoming second season. Fans of the dark fantasy series have been eagerly awaiting new episodes since the show’s debut in August 2022. Now, it has been confirmed that Season 2, set for a 2025 release, will be the last.
Why Is ‘The Sandman’ Ending?
According to showrunner Allan Heinberg, the decision was made back in 2022 when they assessed the remaining Dream material from Gaiman’s DC comics. Heinberg explained that there was only enough story left for one final season, and Netflix supported their vision to wrap things up properly.
However, the announcement coincides with multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Gaiman, which have led to his departure from several projects, including Amazon’s ‘Good Omens’ final season and Disney’s ‘The Graveyard Book’ movie adaptation. Netflix has not commented on whether these allegations played a role in ending the series.
What to Expect in Season 2
The second and final season will adapt the ‘Season of Mists’ storyline from the comics. Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) abdicates control of Hell and hands Morpheus, aka Dream (Tom Sturridge), the key to its gates. This sparks a chaotic power struggle as various immortals vie for control.
New Cast Members Joining Season 2:
Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium
Adrian Lester as Destiny
Barry Sloane as The Prodigal
Ruairi O’Connor as Orpheus
Freddie Fox as Loki
Clive Russell as Odin
Laurence O’Fuarain as Thor

Jack Gleeson as Puck
Indya Moore as Wanda
Steve Coogan as the voice of Barnabas the dog
Returning cast members include Patton Oswalt (Matthew the Raven), Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine), and Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), among others.
What This Means for ‘The Sandman’ Universe
Although the main series is ending, it has already produced a spinoff—‘Dead Boy Detectives’—which launched in April 2024 but was canceled after one season. With Gaiman’s future in Hollywood uncertain, it’s unclear whether we’ll see more adaptations of his work anytime soon.
Final Thoughts
‘The Sandman’ has been a visually stunning and ambitious adaptation, staying true to the source material while bringing Dream’s world to life. While it’s sad to see it end, fans can look forward to a thrilling conclusion in 2025.
