Elton John Criticizes Legal Marijuana in North America: A Gateway to Harder Drugs

Elton John discussing marijuana legalization and its impact on addiction in an interview for Time magazine.

Elton John has expressed strong disapproval of the legalization of marijuana in North America, calling it "one of the greatest mistakes of all time." In a recent interview with Time after being named the magazine's Icon of the Year, John shared his concerns about the impact of cannabis, which has been legalized for both medicinal and recreational use in various U.S. states and Canada.

Reflecting on his past experiences, the 34-year sober musician called marijuana addictive and a gateway to harder drugs. "When you’re stoned – and I’ve been stoned – you don’t think normally," he admitted. He also opened up about the health issues he faced in the 1980s, including throat problems that were linked to marijuana use, leading him to quit the drug following medical advice.

Known for his advocacy for sobriety, John has helped numerous celebrities, including Eminem and Robbie Williams, in their recovery from addiction. He emphasized that acknowledging his own destructive behavior was key to his recovery journey.

John also touched on his notorious temper, which was famously explored in the 1997 documentary Tantrums and Tiaras, revealing how his impatience and fiery personality fuel his creative songwriting process. "If I get a lyric and I look at it, the song comes straight out," he shared.

As John reflects on his extraordinary career, he is also the subject of a new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, directed by his husband David Furnish and RJ Cutler. The film focuses on his preparations for his final North American concert at Dodger Stadium, marking the conclusion of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

Elton John continues to inspire with his honesty, creativity, and advocacy for living a sober, fulfilling life.
