Josh Brolin isn’t just starring in Dune: Part Two—he’s staking his career on it. In a surprising twist leading up to the 2024 Oscars, the actor announced he would quit Hollywood if Denis Villeneuve, the mastermind behind the epic Dune franchise, is once again overlooked for a Best Director nomination.
This isn’t the first time Villeneuve has faced an Academy snub. In 2022, his adaptation of Dune earned 10 Oscar nominations, including wins for Best Cinematography and Visual Effects. Yet Villeneuve himself was shockingly absent from the Best Director category—a decision that baffled fans and critics alike.
Brolin minced no words in calling out the Academy, telling Variety:
“It’s a better movie than the first one. Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy has any meaning, they’ll recognize him.”
With Dune: Part Two already earning critical praise for its ambitious storytelling and deeper character arcs, Villeneuve’s work is being celebrated across the industry. But for Villeneuve, it’s not about the accolades. As he shared, “When your work is appreciated by the community, it feels like you’re part of a family. That’s what truly matters.”
Brolin’s fiery pledge has reignited debates about how the Academy values directors of large-scale, genre-defining films. It also raises a pivotal question: will 2024 be the year Villeneuve gets his due?
As the Oscar buzz builds, one thing is clear—Josh Brolin has ensured this conversation won’t be swept under the sand.
