The epic saga continues! Fresh off the success of Gladiator II, legendary director Ridley Scott has revealed plans for a third installment in the iconic franchise. This time, the story will follow Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, as he grapples with power he never sought.
Scott compared Lucius’s journey to Michael Corleone’s in The Godfather Part II, describing him as a man reluctant to lead after defeating Macrinus and the emperors Geta and Caracalla. “The next film will focus on a man who doesn’t want to be where he is,” Scott shared.
While fans shouldn’t expect another arena showdown, elements of the gladiatorial world might still play a role. Scott has already drafted eight pages of the script, but production won’t start immediately as he’s next working on a Bee Gees biopic.
Actor Paul Mescal is thrilled to return, saying, “I’m massively down for it.” Meanwhile, Scott hinted at deeper themes inspired by the philosophical writings of Marcus Aurelius, suggesting the new chapter will explore timeless struggles of power and morality.
